Big names, oh those big names. We’ve been talking about them, rumors and all those stories, but have we noted where these superb people came from? Check out this list of talented personalities from Negros, and prepare to admire their humble artistry.

1. Susan Roces


Born as Jesusa Purificacion Sonora, this lovely Bacoleña is a member of one of the country’s biggest clans – the Locsin Family of Negros Occidental. A humble wife of the late Fernando Poe Jr., she was born to a French-American mother and a Filipino father of Spanish and Chinese descent.


2. Joel Torre


Who else doesn’t know this guy? This multi-awarded actor is an alumnus of the University of St. La Salle – Bacolod, and is known for movies like Jose Rizal, Esperanza, On-the-Job, and many more.


3. Peque Gallaga


This multi-awarded film maker is known for his most significant achievement in film which is Oro, Plata, Mata. Mr. Peque Gallaga finished his Commerce and Liberal Arts course at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod and is popular of his co-direction with the Shake, Rattle, and Roll series.


4. Allan K.


Okay, now don’t tell me you don’t know this guy. This Filipino singer, comedian, actor, and TV host is a hardworking Bacoleño who made his way to show business through his wits, guts, sweat and his well… his BIGGEST asset: his nose. Mr. Allan Quilantang is also known as the “Pambansang Ilong ng Pilipinas”.


5. Vickie Rushton


Born as Vickie Marie Milagrosa Rushton, this Bacoleña beauty excelled in different beauty pageants and is one of the rising stars of the present times. Vickie Rushton gained more publicity when she finished 4th place in the Pinoy Big Brother: All in. This beautiful Bacoleña was crowned as Lin-ay sang Negros 2009 and Mutya ng Pilipinas 2011. Now that’s stunning! 🙂


6. Saicy Aguila


WOAH!!! I think it’s getting kind of hot here.. hee hee.. This sexy Ilongga was born in Iloilo City but was a dancesport and samba instructor in Bacolod for some years, and was a former reality show contestant of the Pinoy Big Brother Season 2.


7. Kuh Ledesma

I think I’m in love, think I’m … ” oh, haha sorry for singing. But hey! That was Kuh’s song right?


Okay now, this soulful Bacoleña singer finished her nursing course at Colegio de San Agustin – Bacolod. Maria Socorro Ledesma is a renowned singer who won numerous awards and is the very first Filipina to become a recipient of the Salem Music Awards in London on March 1989.  She is also known as the Pop Diva of the Philippines.


8. Ronnie Lazaro

Ronnie Zabala Lazaro was born in Sagay, Negros Occidental and is known for his many appearances in soap televisions and of his movies like Yanngaw, Boundary, and Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story. This Gawad Urian Award-winning Sagaynon has not only received recognition in the country but also in international film festivals such as Cannes, Hongkong and Berlin.


9. Jeffrei Chan

This PBA player was born and raised in Bacolod City, where he started playing basketball for the University of St. La Salle in his grade school, earning the school numerous titles. He also competed in various leagues  for the university during high school before he got offers in Metro Manila and shoot hoops for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters!

10. Monsour del Rosario


Beware of this Taekwondo Black Belter! Manuel Monsour Tabib del Rosario III is a Bacoleño at heart. He was born in Manila, but grew up here in Bacolod where his family hometown resides. He joined the Philippines National Taekwondo Team in 1982 and from there, he competed in several international competitions earning the Philippines some gold medals!


11. Joj and Jai

These beautiful Bacoleña twin celebrities were known for their ‘kulitans’ and being so outspoken inside the Pinoy Big Brother House. These bubbly twins currently appear on the teleserye “Forevermore“, and are dubbed as “the Double Bida ng Bacolod”.


12. Donnie ‘ahas’ Nietes

This humble but fierce boxer was born in Murcia, Negros Occidental and started as a utility man at the ALA Gym before taking up boxing. He got his nickname ‘ahas’ because one of his chores as a utility man was cleaning the snake pit of five BIG PYTHONS! Now one of those pythons had laid 11 eggs but only one survived. Donnie took care of that snake until today. Hee hee .. I might try to figure out how to take care of snakes too!
